Exhaust leaks can cause a stall

So last week I posted about my Miata’s manifold having an exhaust leak causing a stall. Both here and at miata.net I was informed that exhaust leaks can not cause a stall. I re-torqued the exhaust manifold nuts and re-tightened the O2 sensor, which fixed the leak, and it doesn’t stall anymore.

Take that internet! You we’re wrong. HA!

So tell me Oppo, of a time your automotive theory proved right and you fixed your car when everyone told you you were wrong.

Oh, and here’s a picture of my miata staring longingly at HWY1, begging to be driven.

I would classify this more as an manifold leak, rather then general exhaust leak. Yes, the o2 sensor would not monitor correctly due to it, no the engine would probably not run right, but i’ve run engines without any exhaust and all, even ones that run an O2 sensor and they didn’t stall out, so my guess would be the ECU going “wtf, no wai” on the odd o2 reading and just giving up.

Nice to hear it’s fixed tho!

as for story, not much. Mom’s focus ran like shit, had 2-3 second delay when you gunned it before starting to pull. hooked OBD-2 scanner up, took a drive while logging, saw throttle position sensor drop to 0v upon throttle application/general shitty signal, and it worked after replacing it. Also tracked fun stuff like air consumption of the engine and such, fun data to have...

I also recently had an exhaust leak which would cause near-stalls. Since fixed, no more issue.

The ECU overcorrects for bad readings. If the AFR reads high since a significant amount of exhaust isn’t making it to the sensor it’s going to dump fuel in. Then good pulses get through and it reads way too low. On one side of the pendulum it’s not going to make enough power and putter out.

Yeah it causes weird o2 sensor readings. I broke off a stud for a heat shield that took some manifold with it once and the leak caused it to severely overfuel and flood.

Yeah, it also has other issues which sometimes cause a weak idle, so I’m thinking compounding issues made this happen. Plus, people usually have small exhaust leaks due to something rattling apart, not a full on mis-installation causing a leak big enough to see.

Glad you got your mom’s car fixed! I have rotten luck with other people’s cars. It usually takes me two or three tries to get it right.

Loosen the manifold and see if the stall comes back for science

Well the central locking has it’s own life and pretty much always refuses to stay locked on it, so there’s that. I prefer working on my own cars, and preferably when there’s plenty of time to pay attention to your work and work out the little kinks along the way...

I’m with you there. The miata is for tinkering but I bought a brand new truck for daily. It isn’t super Jalop, but knowing I have a vehicle that will always function as it’s supposed to and be very nice while doing it is worth it. Makes my tinkering car so much more relaxing. Took me a week to fix this exhaust issue and I was ain’t care the whole time.
